Angela Merkel, 67, is the longest-serving leader of Germany, having been at the helm since 2005.

For a leader who had previously served as leader of Germany for 16 years, the longtime conservative leader is still doing an impressive job. She’s about to win a fifth term as chancellor of Germany and a fourth with a majority in parliament.

Her party, the Christian Democratic Union, won 60% of the vote in the elections held last month. Merkel won a similar two-thirds majority in her last election in 2013 and, while she wasn’t tested in that contest, this time around, she faced the far-right Alternative for Germany party, which has gained popularity due to a hardline anti-immigration stance.

So what makes her so compelling, so successful?

To gain insight, we spoke to five people about Merkel.

“She is not just a person who receives and defends the interests of German society, but also of the world community with regard to the recognition of the position of Germany as a geopolitical power. That, in fact, is her main work. You cannot think that she’s a suitable person for that without understanding how she’s dealt with the issues of her time.”
