Dona Vekic regrets watching Leeds’ game from the bench

Donna Vekic suffers mid-air fright ahead of Guadalajara victory

DONNA VEKC was one of 19 Sky Bet Championship players to come off the bench to give the Blues victory over Leeds, but the 24-year-old now regrets her decision to sit on the bench and watch from the sidelines as the Blues triumphed over Leeds.

The former Leeds United, Millwall and Norwich City forward was introduced into Saturday’s game with a six-minute cameo, but the moment she took the field was a tense one, with a Leeds player diving at her and making contact, prompting a mid-air fright that saw Vekic momentarily dazed.

She said: “It’s hard not to watch games when you’re on the bench. My husband is a Leeds fan. He was watching the game, and I was watching my own team.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a mid-air scare, ever, so it was probably a bit frightening. I’ve always watched the games in the studio, but I didn’t think I was going to get much chance to do that this week.”

The Serbian international has been on the receiving end of many a scare at Leeds’ hands during her six campaigns with the club, but has never felt afraid in front of the enemy.

“I’m always on the radar,” she said. “Leeds are a top club who want to win. They put my team in the shade in a lot of games. They’ve got the big players, they’re big on winning and they want it all the time.

“I had a shock, but I don’t know what it was. Maybe I was distracted because I had missed some training sessions.

“The thing I’ve learned is never to be too worried about it. The best is yet to come.”

She also revealed how she was made to wait for her team-mates to arrive ahead of the game: “I was the last one in, when the team arrive, to watch the game on TV. Normally, I wait with the other players.”
