Kansas traffic nightmare caused by power outage

Traffic is backed up on Interstate 70 eastward through Nebraska and Kansas on Friday.

The closure is due to a power failure in the area, which has also caused problems for motorists in South Dakota and Kansas, according to CNN affiliate KSFY .

Kansas Highway Patrol spokeswoman Melissa Neece told CNN that approximately 1,600 vehicles were delayed in Kansas due to the bridge on Highway 3 east of Salina that spans Interstate 70. The Kansas Highway Patrol is working to clear the traffic, she said.

There were reports of chaos in Colorado’s mountains.

Reporter Erin Greenberg of the Denver CBS affiliate, said traffic was backed up about two miles in Lake County, where the I-70 Bridge was shutdown due to failure of the overhead power lines.

“The backup is growing because traffic lights all along Interstate 70 west of (the bridge) are out of order,” she said.

The bridge carries about 600 vehicles per hour, she said.

Several wrecks have also occurred on I-70, which is closed from Mile Post 7 in Wisconsin, near the Wyoming border, to Mile Post 4 in Nebraska.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis told The Denver Post the highway was blocked because of a wreck at the Manitou Beach curve, which is near the Wyoming border.
