Prince Charles also chose not to attend the funeral.

Former royal biographer Peter Saunders is author of a new book on the Duke’s Royal Highness’s time in the Royal Household, and was speaking to ITV News about the reaction from the Palace.
“I can’t say anything that Charles felt he should say,” said Peter Saunders, “but I know he wishes he had. I do believe that it was a mistake and that there was a real sense of humiliation and public disempowerment. The reason he was there was to represent the UK, which he was a symbol of, not a monarch of, and it felt like he had just walked off the set.”
Prince William and Prince Harry were both 15 years old when their mother, Princess Diana, died. The duke was seven when his mother passed away.
Their decision to walk behind their mothers at the funeral in an apparent protest of Diana’s death led to outrage, and a protest led by celebrities. The protest was attended by more than 3,000 people. The Queen said the protest was “disrespectful” and demanded a “respectful” show of grief, which was not shown by the Duke and Duchess later at the funeral.
