Elina Svitolina called Sunday a nightmare. She got smacked by Leylah Fernandez for 6-4, 6-1 on the Philippe Chatrier Court of the French Open, the greatest tennis match in the 11-year history of Roland Garros.
Svitolina, a Ukraine native, struggled with high-speed topspin shots and mental mistakes.
“To lose, of course, it’s a nightmare,” she said. “I’m more disappointed than anything.”
At one point, a man at the French Open stood up in the crowd and tried to rip off Fernandez’s hijab. He was thrown out by French security.
Later, when a women’s player, Larisa Savchenko, started choking, a man standing nearby broke her racket.
Savchenko struggled. It appeared she lost consciousness briefly, but she got up and continued play.
Watch the moment the man who tried to take Fernandez’s hijab tried to rip off her hijab below.
