New Delhi, Sep 30: There’s no denying the fact that the former Congress president has become a household name after a video surfaced in which she was seen hitting the back of her head with a hard object.

“They were trying to hurt and discredit her through the media and it was an attempt to take down a former president,” said Congress leader Abhinandan Varma on Thursday.

While the Congress leader couldn’t be sure if the woman slapped the former president was in fact the prime minister, he said, “The person who had the video (of the alleged incident) is the Prime Minister. But we do not know the identity of the person at the moment.”

According to several reports, the woman in the video is Meira Kumar, who is the spokesperson of the Congress government in Gujarat.

“There have been two attempts to bring down Narendra Modi because he has not provided the support required for the government in the state,” said Varma.

Varma was speaking to reporters at an event here in Delhi to mark the 70th anniversary of the birth of former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Varma said the prime minister and his office are taking the matter seriously.

“The PMO is concerned about the incident. The issue will be also looked into by the BJP’s anti-trust cell,” said Varma.

The Congress leader added that the allegations against the Congress party aren’t only coming from a person but the entire country.

“People in the country want the Congress chief to step down,” he said.

Varma said what he and his party want is for the BJP to come back to power after the general elections.
